Our
purpose

The Forest Innovation Platform (FIP) is a collaborative initiative delivering data-driven, climate-informed assessments and planning tools to strengthen the resilience of forest lands and the communities that depend on them.

Our goal is to find the highest quality data and make it accessible at a glance, so you can spend less time wrangling data and more time acting.

Our
principles

The Forest Innovation Platform is guided by four core principles that shape how we design, build, and govern the platform.

1

Open, collaborative and inclusive

We build this platform together with the people who use it — practitioners, partners, and experts from every region and background. Their input shapes what we build, so it actually works for the people relying on it.

2

Making shared learning accessible

Our network of experts is always learning. We share what we find freely and with the whole forestry community so that everyone, and every forest, benefits.

3

Scientifically vetted, rigorous standards

All datasets and methods are reviewed by experts and held to scientific best practices, so you can trust what you see and rely on it.

4

Accessible and transparent

We're upfront about how our data and tools are built. Sources, methods, and limits are always documented clearly, so you know exactly what you're using and how the information can support you.

Our
Methodology

The platform follows a structured, transparent approach to data development and integration.

Source data review

We identify and assess relevant datasets based on quality, relevance, scale, and coverage, ensuring they are appropriate for intended use cases.

Logical mapping

Data are structured and mapped to reflect forest conditions, visualize risks, and support user questions and decision-making needs.

Expert review

Subject-matter experts review data sources, assumptions, and outputs to validate scientific integrity and practical relevance.

Technical approach

Data are integrated into a scalable, technical architecture designed for transparency, updates, and growth, with a user interface that supports the needs of both technical and non-technical users.
